    Sometimes you put things into outlines that just don’t work when you get into the story. You have to remain true to your characters’ motivations, thoughts, and voice as you write. You might not have to narrate the character’s thoughts, but they should show through his or her actions, mannerisms and voice. In short, make sure that your heart is connected into your scene and that you’re not just composing from the head. I’ve said before that you must “write from the heart.” Even in the outlining stage, you have to “outline from the heart.”


    But I learned long ago that I should never write to an outline. Write beyond the outline.
