New Moons (10)

My blood thumped in my ears as I ran striving to be in time. Taji’s whimpering cut through the bellows of the beast, straight to my heart.

I tried to block the hydra’s advance, but dropped and rolled as two heads slammed into the ground were I’d been standing. The third head swung in and clipped me as I stood. Falling backward I tripped on a rock; sprawled on my back I looked up at three heads weaving above me.

I slashed awkwardly at the darting heads. Blood seeped from my useless left arm and thigh; both pulsed and throbbed in burning agony, proving my efforts futile. The heads blurred above me and I blinked the stinging sweat out of my eyes.

Rancid breath gagged me and my vision filled with daggered teeth as a head attempted to take mine from my shoulders. Desperate, I threw my arm up to block the descending death.

Stabbing, I shoved my sword up through the beast’s palate, into its brain. Hot blood gushed over my arm and face, blinding me. Twin roars of agony assaulted me, echoing painfully through my skull. Blinded by blood and deafened, I waited for death to take me.
